How Networking Know-How Can Benefit Your Art Career

For most of my life, I have often been accused of looking at the world through rose-colored glasses. I have actually found that this personal character trait has served me well through the years, especially in regard to pursuing my art. That frame of mind could quite possibly explain my outlook regarding the positive affect of reaching out to others to connect in the art world.
I would like to give you a recent example of an experience that I encountered with a fellow artist a month ago that was quite enlightening. As a total stranger from New Orleans, I called her studio/storefront in Texas to inquire about a product of hers that I had just purchased at a major art store. As we spoke for a few moments, I realized that I was in the midst of a delightful conversation with a woman who was not only a wealth of information, but also a person who generously helpful with the nitty gritty of marketing. She explained that in her community artists often displayed their work in coffee shops that were willing to sell it. What a great idea! Imagine being able to sell your work without having to package and send it to someone a great distance away. Further, imagine making it available in your own town without having to spend hours in a lawn chair at an art show.
But, her helpful tips went into more detail than that. She was very candid in telling me that she never spent more than 50 cents for any frame that she used for her artwork. I was shocked, since frames have always been a huge expense for me, especially in preparing for art exhibits. She said that she always painted her frames with a simple white-wash technique because it had great appeal to her clients who decorated in "Shabby Chic" style. Her suggestions went on and on with each one being more helpful thant the next.
I have chosen to use this one example to show you that most people enjoy talking about their own experiences and sharing their insights. I have personally found every artist I know to be extremely helpful. But, if you do not know any other artists to interact with on a regular basis, there are some opportunities that you may want to take advantage of that could prove quite advantageous.
In order to avoid creating art in your own "personal bubble" stop by your local community college and introduce yourself to people in the art department there. It is possible that they could offer you an opportunity to have an exhibition there. People like to have art on their walls, even if it is temporary, so why not ask? You can also approach your local library and ask if you could display your art in an appropriate area. You could even offer to facilitate a "question/answer" event for patrons who would like to learn more about your work.
Once you start getting the word out that you are an active artist, you will be astounded by how helpful people are willing to be. Give it a try. Put on your own pair of rose-colored glasses and expect the best of others to help you in the pursuit of your artistic endeavors.
