How to Write a Resume For an Internship
By Brian G Chadra
So you need to get that resume in shape to qualify for an internship. Many thoughts and ideas race through your mind as you consider what to include and what to leave out. Since you only have one shot at this, it's extremely important to make a good impression on the selection committee.
Let's begin with the basic resume: header, job objective, education, experience and miscellaneous. Make sure that all of the information in your header is current and up to date (i.e. name, address, phone numbers and professional email address). Your job objective should be concise and to the point. Make sure that you are targeting this internship with your statement. Include a few keywords from the advertisement in this area. This will give the impression that not only are you a good match for the position but that you know the occupation as well. Employers are trained to look for keywords in a resume, so you are effectively making your resume stand out from those of the competition.
In the education section, be sure to include any awards and coursework that is relevant to this process. If you are interning at a paper for example, list any writing experience or honors that you may have received in this area. It shows a dedication and willingness to achieve excellence. The majority of companies would prefer this type of employee. Put your best foot forward here with your particular strengths. Emphasize your willingness to go the extra mile for the team. In the experience section, include any other related work that you have done in the past. If you are stuck, list any jobs and the duties that you have had and the skill set it took to maintain that job. Chances are that some will be directly applicable to the internist position.
Finally, finish up with some hobbies or areas of interest to you. Sometimes, this will strike a chord with employers who share the same kind of activity. Now go out and get that internship. Good luck!
OK, you are still worried that your resume isn't good enough. How about a program that will do the job for you in less than 30 minutes? Sound too good to be true? Well, check this out for yourself.
