Manufacturing Manager Resume - How I Wrote a Resume For Manufacturing Management
By David Alan Carter
Charles was a client with more than 20 years of managerial experience in manufacturing. Job prospects are highly competitive in the area of manufacturing management. After conducting a telephone interview with Charles that evening, and having gathered together his previous resume and a worksheet of pertinent information, three key decisions were quickly apparent:
The resume format should be chronological (it follows your work history in reverse chronological order - backward from your current job - listing companies and dates and responsibilities). The chronological resume is the most effective resume format when one's work history is stable, professional growth consistent, and career goals remain in the same employment field.
Because of the extreme competitiveness in the field, I would tailor the resume toward a specific objective rather then trying to make the resume be all things to all people (or in other words, too general).
I would lead with a compelling introduction of the candidate.
Here's The Objective Statement I Wrote for this Manufacturing Manager Resume
A senior-level position in Manufacturing Management requiring an effective business strategist and proactive team leader with a demonstrated track record of contribution to the bottom line.
Here's The Profile (or Summary) Section I Wrote
Dedicated, results-driven senior executive with more than twenty years of progressively responsible experience in Manufacturing and Operations Management--including P&L accountability for up to $52 million, and administrative oversight in all major functional areas (i.e.: manufacturing, engineering, quality control, finance, accounting, customer relations, and human resources).
Particular expertise in Strategic Planning and Analysis, Policies & Procedures Administration, Budgeting, Materials Management, Cost Control, Quality Assurance, and the Selection, Training and Supervision of both Exempt and Non-Exempt Personnel.
Proven ability to develop and implement plans necessary to realize company vision and objectives while creating an environment which fully utilizes all resources to their potential.
People-oriented leader with an empowering style of management; reputation as a problem solver.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
What Was I Thinking?
If your resume needs an objective statement (and not all do), keep in mind that you're playing to the needs and desires of the hiring official. It's not about you. This is not the time for you to pontificate a career wish list. On the resume I wrote for Charles, I wanted to focus attention on two or three attributes that would be of undeniable value to the prospective hiring official.
The Profile is an expansion of those attributes, putting some flesh on the bones. Because I had a lot of material to cover, I italicized the second paragraph to draw the eye and keep the overall design from looking too wordy. Bullet points accomplish a similar feat; driving home Charles' leadership aptitude, management style and communication skills.
Work history came next, then finally the education section (it placed last in the lineup since the value of formal education is usually trumped by recent job experience, and this is certainly the case when that education is 20 years distant).
Could Charles Have Written This Manufacturing Manager Resume Himself?
Most certainly. Given time, a bit of study and some marketing acumen, most folks can write an effective resume. Then again, if your resume is going to be fighting for attention in an extremely competitive field, or if your work history or job qualifications are difficult for you to express in a promotional and unbiased manner, the services of a professional resume writer might make sense.
Tip: if you're leaning towards a pro, look for a certified resume writer, and a writer who will guarantee that the resume he creates will generate interviews.
