Aries (March 21 to April 19)

For the Pavement Pounders (Job Seekers):

Your enthusiasm could get you into an interesting conversation today, provided you leave room for the other person to participate. When someone asks what you’re looking for, give them a clear answer. “Anything” sounds flexible, but it leaves them trying to place you somewhere between chief operating officer and seasonal gift wrapper.

Choose one direction and explain why it fits. A short story about a problem you solved will help more than twelve adjectives about your work ethic. You have something worthwhile to offer. Slow down enough for people to hear it.

And if a role stretches your experience, investigate before ruling yourself out. Let the employer decide whether you’re qualified after you’ve made a fair case.

For the Working Stiffs (Already Employed):

That improvement you keep mentioning deserves a practical proposal. Explain what’s going wrong, what you’d change, and how you could test it without turning the department upside down.

Someone may ask questions you find painfully obvious. Answer them anyway. They might be seeing a complication you haven’t considered, or they might need a little time to catch up with the parade already marching through your head.

You’ll get further by inviting one useful colleague into the plan. Pick somebody who can strengthen it, including somebody willing to tell you where it might fall apart. Support is lovely. Competence is lovely, too.

Taurus (April 20 to May 20)

For the Pavement Pounders (Job Seekers):

A handsome job title can make a person overlook some mighty unattractive working conditions. Before you get attached, find out what the position actually offers.

Ask about the salary range, the schedule, and what they expect during busy periods. “We’re flexible” deserves a follow-up question. Sometimes it means you can collect your child at three. Sometimes it means they can call you at nine.

Write down what you need from your next job while you’re thinking clearly. It’s easier to hold your ground when you haven’t just been flattered by someone who says you’re exactly what they’ve been looking for.

You’re choosing where to spend a substantial portion of your life. You’re allowed to inspect the premises.

For the Working Stiffs (Already Employed):

Your reliability has become quite popular. Apparently, everybody would like a little, preferably by the end of the day.

Before accepting another assignment, look at what you’ve already promised. Then ask which deadline should move. You can say it pleasantly and still wait for an actual answer.

If you’ve been covering a vacant position, keep track of the added responsibilities. Bring that information to a conversation about staffing, scope, or compensation. Your manager may appreciate what you’re doing without understanding how much it involves.

Give them the details. Quietly coping has its virtues, but it makes a remarkably poor staffing plan.

Gemini (May 21 to June 20)

For the Pavement Pounders (Job Seekers):

Somebody in your network may be able to offer useful information, but you’ll need to ask something more specific than “Any leads?”

Try a former colleague who knows your work. Tell them the kind of role you’re pursuing and ask whether they know a company doing something relevant. Make the request easy to understand and easy to answer.

During an interview, let your curiosity do some work. Ask why the position is open and what the new person will need to accomplish first. Listen carefully. People reveal a surprising amount when you resist the urge to fill every silence.

You can always tell another good story later. First, find out what this one’s about.

For the Working Stiffs (Already Employed):

A conversation could clear up something that has been irritating you all week. Ask the person involved before consulting three coworkers and the imaginary jury in your head.

Keep the question neutral. “Can we clarify who’s handling this?” usually gets further than “Interesting that this has somehow become my problem.”

If you reach an agreement, send a short recap. Include who is doing what and by when. There’s no need to make it formal enough for a courthouse. You just want everyone remembering the same conversation tomorrow.

Your people skills are useful today. Give them a purpose beyond surviving the group chat.

Cancer (June 21 to July 22)

For the Pavement Pounders (Job Seekers):

Your search needs a routine you can live with. If you’ve been spending the whole day applying and the whole evening feeling guilty about stopping, the arrangement could use a little supervision.

Choose a manageable set of tasks. Finish a tailored application, follow up where appropriate, and make one useful connection. Then allow the day to end.

When you talk with employers, ask about the ordinary workday. Who sets priorities? How are new employees trained? What happens when the workload gets heavy?

A company can say lovely things about its values. You’ll learn plenty from how it handles a Tuesday when two people are out and a customer is upset.

For the Working Stiffs (Already Employed):

One small workplace nuisance may be taking up an unreasonable amount of your life. A confusing handoff, a report nobody reads, or an interruption that arrives every time you begin concentrating.

Pick the one you can do something about. Suggest a clear change and explain how it would help the work. You don’t need to bring a complete history of everyone’s failures, although I understand the temptation to prepare an appendix.

Save some energy for yourself, too. You can care about the team without becoming its emotional support department. Let somebody else ask why the printer is making that noise.

Leo (July 23 to August 22)

For the Pavement Pounders (Job Seekers):

Give people a chance to see what you do well. Choose a relevant work sample or prepare an achievement story with a result someone can understand.

Be specific about your part. If you improved retention, tell them how. If you helped deliver a project, explain what depended on you. You don’t have to claim the whole production to show that you earned your place in the credits.

In an interview, tell the story and let it land. A good answer can lose some of its charm when it’s still going four minutes after the question has been satisfied.

You’ve got presence. Put some useful evidence behind it.

For the Working Stiffs (Already Employed):

There may be room to bring a little imagination to work today. Offer the presentation idea, suggest a fresh approach, or show someone a better way to explain something complicated.
Give your collaborators their share of the praise. People enjoy working with someone who makes the whole team look good.

If you want more visibility, send a concise progress update. Describe the outcome, mention the people involved, and explain what comes next. That is perfectly respectable professional communication.

There’s no need to wait until your annual review and hope your manager has maintained a private scrapbook of your finest moments. Help them keep up.

Virgo (August 23 to September 22)

For the Pavement Pounders (Job Seekers):

You may have reached the point where preparation has become a very attractive hiding place. The résumé is accurate, the qualifications are relevant, and you’re considering another afternoon with the margins.

Send it, sweetheart.

Use that attention to detail where it can change the outcome. Check the application instructions, prepare for the interview, or research the department. Your eighth revision of a perfectly serviceable sentence probably isn’t where the breakthrough lives.

Also consider what you need from the next job beyond the work itself. Location, flexibility, and a reasonable schedule belong in the conversation. A career has to fit inside a life eventually.

For the Working Stiffs (Already Employed):

Take a look at the arrangement holding your workday together. You may have built an impressive system around expectations that need to change.

If you regularly work late because requests arrive at the last minute, raise the timing problem. If nobody knows which assignment comes first, ask for priorities. A better spreadsheet can only compensate for so much confusion.

Choose one practical adjustment and explain the benefit. You don’t need a grand confrontation.
And leave one harmless imperfection alone today. The world has survived a great deal. It will probably make it through an afternoon with that folder named slightly differently from the others.

Libra (September 23 to October 22)

For the Pavement Pounders (Job Seekers):

Read your next outreach message before sending it. How much of it is an apology for contacting someone?

You can remove most of that.

A courteous introduction, a relevant detail, and a clear request are enough. People can decide whether they have time without you declining on their behalf in the opening paragraph.

Today’s theme suits making a connection or following up on a conversation. Mention something specific you discussed and explain your interest.

You can also have an opinion about the job. Ask the question that matters to you. Getting hired is exciting, but you’d like to know what you’re agreeing to before the welcome email arrives.

For the Working Stiffs (Already Employed):

You may be asked to help two people reach an agreement. Before you begin smoothing things over, decide what you think the work actually needs.

Then say so.

Agreeing privately with everybody can leave you publicly committed to an impossible arrangement. If deadlines or instructions conflict, put the conflict in front of the person authorized to resolve it.

Your tact will help. Use it to make a clear recommendation easier to hear.

And if a meeting ends with everyone “feeling good” but nobody owning the next step, ask one more question. Feelings are lovely. They rarely submit the deliverable.

Scorpio (October 23 to November 21)

For the Pavement Pounders (Job Seekers):

Put your investigative instincts to useful work. Look beyond the polished job advertisement and prepare questions about the role’s expectations.

What needs fixing? What resources are available? Why did the previous person leave? Ask with genuine curiosity, and listen for answers that contain information.

You’ll want to examine how you describe your own value, too. A strong accomplishment can disappear under a vague phrase like “supported operations.” Explain what you improved and what happened because of it.

There’s plenty you can keep private. Your ability to do the job shouldn’t be one of those things. Give the employer enough evidence to make an informed decision.

For the Working Stiffs (Already Employed):

Consider where you’re putting your influence. Are you helping solve a problem, or spending an impressive amount of energy keeping track of who caused it?

You may have every reason to be annoyed. Decide what outcome would make the situation better and work toward that.

If a responsibility has quietly expanded, document the change. If an agreement is unclear, ask for clarification. Clear facts will serve you better than a perfect understanding of everybody’s motives.

Be careful with confidential information, too. Being trusted with something is a compliment. You don’t need to demonstrate that trust by mentioning you know a secret.

Sagittarius (November 22 to December 21)

For the Pavement Pounders (Job Seekers):

A possibility outside your usual search may deserve a closer look. A different industry, an adjacent role, or a company you hadn’t pictured yourself joining.

Investigate before falling in love with the idea. Find out which of your skills transfer and where you’d need to learn. Then speak with someone who understands the work.

You don’t need to satisfy every preference in a posting to make a credible application. You do need to explain why your experience prepares you for the important parts.

Let your curiosity carry you a little further today. Bring your judgment along, too. Somebody has to read the details while you’re imagining your new email signature.

For the Working Stiffs (Already Employed):

Your next interesting assignment may begin with a useful conversation about growth. Ask what experience you need for a larger role and whether there’s a project that could help you build it.
Be ready to explain what interests you. “More responsibility” can mean almost anything,
including a committee nobody has escaped since 2019.

Before saying yes, ask about the time, support, and expected result. Check what you’d need to finish or hand over first.

There’s room for ambition and follow-through in the same day. Complete one existing promise before making a new one. Your future self would appreciate arriving without an entourage of overdue tasks.

Capricorn (December 22 to January 19)

For the Pavement Pounders (Job Seekers):

Some useful progress may be quiet today. Prepare your references, practice a difficult interview answer, or examine which applications have produced a response.

If the search has stalled, look for a pattern you can change. Are you pursuing a clear target? Does your résumé show the relevant qualifications quickly? Are you making connections as well as submitting applications?

Choose one improvement and put it to work. You don’t need to rebuild your entire professional identity before dinner.

Then stop at a reasonable hour. Exhaustion can make every problem look permanent. Give yourself a chance to return with a clearer head and something other than cold coffee in your system.

For the Working Stiffs (Already Employed):

You’ve probably handled something important so quietly that everyone assumes it handles itself. Make that work visible.

Describe the risk you prevented, the decision you prepared, or the process you kept moving. Explain the effect in language someone outside your specialty can follow.

You may also need to hand something over. If only you know how a task gets done, begin documenting it and discuss a backup. Being indispensable sounds wonderful until you try to take four days off.

Your competence should support your career and your life. Give the business a chance to function while you’re at lunch.

Aquarius (January 20 to February 18)

For the Pavement Pounders (Job Seekers):

Visit your professional community today, whether that’s an industry group, a former team, or a conversation you’ve been meaning to join.

Share what you’re pursuing with enough detail for people to recognize a fit. Name the kind of work and a strength you bring. “Open to opportunities” leaves an awful lot to the imagination.
Contribute something useful where you can. Answer a question, share relevant information, or make an introduction. You can build relationships while looking for work without making every exchange an application in disguise.

And follow up with the person who gave you helpful advice. People appreciate knowing their suggestion went somewhere besides your saved messages.

For the Working Stiffs (Already Employed):

You may see a change the team needs, but find out what others have tried before unveiling the grand solution.

Ask questions. Someone may know the technical limitation, the customer requirement, or the budget problem that explains why things developed this way.

Once you understand the situation, propose a manageable improvement and identify who needs to be involved. You’ll build support faster when people can see how the change helps them do their jobs.

Keep your independence and leave room for cooperation. Being the person with a fresh perspective is valuable. Being the person who sighs whenever anybody else speaks can make that value harder to appreciate.

Pisces (February 19 to March 20)

For the Pavement Pounders (Job Seekers):

Your career deserves a clearer introduction. Look at the top of your résumé and your LinkedIn profile. Can someone quickly understand what you do and why it matters?

Choose one accomplishment that supports the work you want next. Explain what needed doing, how you contributed, and what improved. If you have a meaningful number, include it. If you don’t, give an honest description of the difference you made.

You can acknowledge the team without editing yourself out of the story. The employer needs to understand what you bring.

Once the application is ready, send it. Then go somewhere your inbox can’t keep making eye contact with you.

For the Working Stiffs (Already Employed):

Somebody has noticed you’re capable, kind, and unlikely to make a fuss. That can lead to good opportunities. It can also lead to an astonishing quantity of other people’s unfinished work.
Before accepting the next rescue mission, ask what it involves and how it fits with your priorities. You can be helpful without volunteering blind.

Make time for a conversation about your own growth. Tell your manager what you’d like to do more of and bring an example of work that shows you’re ready.

You deserve a professional reputation with a little more detail than “always happy to help.” Let people know what you’re especially good at, so the next request might actually take you somewhere.

with Bonnie Hayes

Today’s sky features a supportive connection between the Sun in Libra and Jupiter in Leo, a Sagittarius Moon, and Pluto turning direct in Aquarius. Astrologically, that gives us themes of confidence, possibility, and how we handle power.

Signs: Aries | Taurus | Gemini | Cancer | Leo | Virgo | Libra | Scorpio | Sagittarius | Capricorn | Aquarius | Pisces
Bonnie Hayes is a fictional character. The workplace nonsense she discusses is all too real.
